Earth Day blog candy

Hi everyone!  Happy Earth Day!!  I am so thrilled this weekend we have SUN at my house and the timing of Earth Day couldn't be more perfect!  Now, I know for most of you around the country- you all have had plenty of sunshine (yes, I see the FaceBook pictures of you and your kids in shorts), but here in Portland Oregon, it's pretty much non stop rainy and cold.  All the time.  But today it is supposed to reach 77 degrees and we are getting out in the sun to plant our garden!!

In case any of you are wondering what Earth Day is all about it started back in 1970 by Senator Nelson of Wisconsin and lead to the Clean Air, Clean Water and the Endangered Species Act.  There are lots of little things anyone can do help out our environment (like recycling and buying local produce and goods).  The Earth Day website has lots of info, and just for fun, you can take the short Ecological Footprint quiz and see how your own lifestyle impacts the Earth.

In the spirit of Reuse, Recycle and Renew, I have some blog candy to give away!  I have been setting some stuff aside and I have enough for 3 packages to give away.  These are all brand new goodies!

  6. Happy Earth Day! We've been recycling for years, but I also keep a garden. My seedlings are coming along nicely this year, but it's still too cold out to plant (I'm up in Canada).

    Have a great day. :)

  7. Hi Michelle,
My favorite way to recycle is to donate unwanted items to the thrift store run by my son's school. I work at the store one day a month and it's awesome to see people in there buying clothes, household items and furniture that are unwanted by others. I rarely put anything in the trash these days. It either goes in the bin for Treasures (our thrift store) or the recycling bin.

  8. We have always been recyclers ! If i cannot repurpose something, it is recycled correctly. Clothes are donated to church, toys to the preschool, books to the library, small appliances are given to votech schools for them to practice and and repair! We grow veggies! We do not use paper products(plates, cups, napkins) or plastic! We use our own bags when going to the grocery store! I try to not use too many cleaning items, I use vinegar and baking soda as much as I can!
    Whew...I think that's about all!

  12. Total recycler (although I sometimes cheat by tossing an occasional peanut butter jar). Before the 'throw it all into one container' mode, I went so far as to take labels off of cans and put those in with paper, the can in with cans. So grateful for the recycling companies that are trying to make a difference for our earth.

  13. Glad you got some sunshine today :) We have had some glorious days this weekend - happy sigh... :)

We do a lot of recycling - have 3 bins versus one garbage bin each week at roadside :) If it can be recycled it is. Take a trip every other year or so with old microwaves/applicances/computers etc. to recycle them too. KILLS me to see people tossing things in the garbage that can be recycled!

  14. Happy Earth Day!!!

I like to keep the containers that candy, and some food items come in. I wash them, decorate them and give them as gifts or use them as crafty supply storage.

    Thanks for a chance.

  16. Hello, Michelle! Enjoy your "warm" sunny day! It is a cool rainy day here in my part of NC. Just out hopping about and saw your post! We do recycle in my home and if there is any tip that makes it work is that it has to be doable for everyone. We have the containers outside the garage door so the kids know that recycle stuff gets dumped there asap. It helps that we live in the country and do not have trash pick up. We have to take our stuff to the dump which requires it all be sorted anyway. However, making it easier at home with separate containers is a must for sanity purposes.

    Enjoy gardening!

  17. I do recycle jars from Jams and plastic container from ice creams. I used them as storage for my die cuts and beads. I also do a yearly recycle of clothes that we don't use, I give them away to those who like them.

  18. We recycle what I don't keep for scrapbooking or cards. There is a lot of items I try to come up with ideas for cards. (Like pop cans, they make awesome flowers) cereal boxes for chipboard. So much fun to see what you can do with a lot of the recycle.

  27. Amazing blog candy giveaway!!!!! Thank you for the chance to win!!!!
We recycle everything that can be recycled. We have an old wooden crate in our mud room for newspapers and magazines and any other type of paper. Then we tie it up with string on recycling day that way the paper doesn't blow everywhere when it's windy outside :-)

  29. This year I didn't do anything specific for Earth Day but next year I will be having a book launch for my new book about going green. One tip from the book- acid free paper recycles better than paper that isn't acid free.

  33. Hi Michelle! What a great idea! My family recycles year round. Our trash into the recycling bins, clothes to Goodwill or Amvets, coffee grounds and egg shells to compost, and soda cans for charity. It is amazing how much we have in our weekly bins at the curb. And yes, it kills me to see people with a large pile on trash day and they don't recycle. It is so easy to do! Thanks for a chance to win.

  34. It was a happy Earth Day indeed! I live in Western Washington, so I know what you mean about a sunny day reaching the high 70's! I got the chance to dry all 4 of my loads of laundry on the line. For Earth Day, we celebrated by cleaning up the yard here at home and at my daughter's day care. We planted plants at both places.

  35. Hi Michelle!
We recycle year-round at our house. some crafty recycling though would be using cereal box cardboard as chipboard with my Cricut & dies and organize my paper scraps by color so I can easily find & use them for paper piecing projects!
Thanks for a great give away!

  37. Save those TP & Paper Towel rolls when empty. Slice them down from top to bottem and use to keep wrapping paper and wall paper rolls from unraveling. Works great. Also, keep empty tissue boxes. If you pick nice designs they can be used for backgrounds on cards, scrapbooks, as tags, etc.
Thank for the blog Candy offer Michelle. So generous of you! Happy Earth day!

  38. Love, blog candy! Would be so excited to win one. As far as Earth Day is concerncd, it's hubby's birthday, so that's first, but we recycle all year long...much the same as many who commented, we take our plastic bags to a thrift store, use cloth re-usable bags for groceries, and recycle plastics (the only recycle our city takes). Enjoy the sun.

  39. I take computer paper that is only used on one side and use it to leave notes for my kids or myself or cut it up, staple it into pads and use it as telephone message notepads. Works great and the paper gets used a second time before recycling. I use it for masks and test stamping too. I also reuse all of my online shopping packaging to send new packages!

  47. We have always recycled about everything but the bins live out in our garage. On Sunday I decided to use some of those unused waste paper baskets we had hanging around out there and get them in the house to use for the different items we recycle. We now have one for glass, paper, and cans. We do have a deposit on all soda cans here in New England so there is one for those also. By not having to go either outside or to the garage each time we have a recyclable item we recycle more.

  50. Just wanted to make it a nice round 50 comments!

We have always been a recycling family, have to be with all the milk we go through. But this year in particular, my girls have started to make an effort to clean up at parks we go to, or around the cul de sac we live in, they are more aware of the garbage in public places so we've started to "clean up" outside at least once every couple months.
