Hi everyone! Print magazines. Let's discuss, a sign of the past? Gone by the way of the newspapers, VHS and cassette tapes? I fear this may be truer than I thought. Early this year, CARDS and all Northridge Media publications announced they were going to an all digital format and a month or so ago Paper Crafts magazine followed suit.
So what does this mean? Well, for many crafters, not much. Based on the comments I read on Facebook and other forums, many prefer to view magazines on their iPads, Kindles and such. Me? I much prefer print! Give me a magazine I can hold, dog ear, bring to softball games and snuggle up with on the couch at night. I love to tab pages of inspirational projects and refer back to my old issues all the time. This change is very sad to me, call me old school.
So what do we do? Simple, if we want to save the print magazines, we have to subscribe to them! Most card magazines are quarterly now and down to 4 issues a year, so the annual subscription isn't really much. Here are the magazines I love the most:
Annual cost of $19.97 (for US)
Here is a link to their current issue section on their website.
What's cool about this issue is my Hot Chocolate ensemble projects are featured on the slideshow, and the graphics on the page is from my cards!
Annual cost of $21.97 plus delivery and 1 free issue
Here is a link to their current issue section of their website.

So for about $20 a year, you get to support a dying industry! To be fair, I purchased a digital subscription to Paper Crafts and CARDS. Each online magazines have different features and honestly, I much prefer Paper Crafts over CARDS. They are way more user friendly and have the ability to Pin pages. I love the projects in both of these magazines and will continue to support them in their digi format, but there is no comparison, I just prefer print!!
So on to the giveaway, I have 4 magazines issue up for grabs! Just leave me a comment here on this post and let me know your thoughts on print vs. digi magazines and I will pick one commenter to receive the following:
Paper Creations
Summer 2013
Fall 2013
Winter 2014
CardMaker

I will pick a winner Wednesday, November 6th! Thanks for stopping by and have a great day!
Hi Michelle! I agree with you, I do prefer print magazines, sad to see good ones going digital.
ReplyDeleteHugs!
Giovana
I'm definitely a print girl all the way Michelle! I will mourn the passing of CARDS and Paper Crafts to digital, but I'm very thankful that the magazines themselves survived. Interesting point about subscribing to print issues to save them. This did nothing to save CARDS or Paper Crafts. I would rather continue to support them to be honest, I like those magazines far above any others.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny, because in the UK I still see rows of different papercrafts magazines on the shelves. And you know what? They're far inferior to anything Paper Crafts or CARDS did/do. It's not always about the media used, it's about the quality.
But you've definitely provided some food for thought here. Thank you! :-)
I agree...I want the print! I was very disappointed when Paper Crafts went digital, and did not renew. I am thinking about switching to Cardmaker. As a paper crafter and card maker, if I wanted to go digital I would send an e-card rather than continue with this hobby I so enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI love my print. There's just something entirely different about curling up with a magazine and a cup of tea instead of my iPad. I love my iPad but after working on a computer for way too long each day, I don't want to look at one for my crafty escape.
ReplyDeleteI also prefer print, I like to go look back at all my past issues for inspiration, even though I have an iPad you need to be hooked up to the we'd to view , so on my lunch break I would like to browse the magazine over and over.. It is harder with digital... I need to go check out pricing on the digital.. I love seeing my friends work appear in the magazines! Xx
ReplyDeleteThanks for the give away! I prefer print, it's just way better to hold. You can also look at them over and over and I find this hard electronically or I just forget about it if I can't physically see it.
ReplyDeleteMe too. PRINT, love my magazines. I even told my daughters to put them in my coffin I will have all the time to read them, I will need a flash light also....Halloween joke? hehehe
ReplyDeleteI agree Michelle it's sad that everything is going digital . I love the print magazine . I like the Cardmaker magazine and subscribed to it for several but it was so frustrating here in Can. cause it was almost always outdated by the time I received it .
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid I am behind the times and would prefer to be so. I feel the same way you do about dog earring the pages and refering back to them. I don't have many devices that I could read a digital subscription on and I'm not sure I want to.
ReplyDeleteI do love my print ones too, I find I don't like being on my kindle too much, I don't want to be constantly on a device, I like to sit and relax with some tea. However I've got to say the only real plus side to it is storage, I live in an apartment and storage is an issue. So I'm mostly print but do see the benefits to digital.
ReplyDeleteI love print and always will,So does the card magazine come didgital now.I paid and have not yet received it.I get many on digi which I very seldom visit.I am hands on and you should see all my tabs on pages. Thanks and have a wonderful day:)
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! Print is much better. It is so sad that magazines are going digital. I prefer to have magazine in my hot little hand! I am sorry to say, but what IF zombies come, and all electricity goes off??? These electrical gadgets just are not going to work. Then what are we going to read? What I say?? What???
ReplyDeleteI am like you, I prefer print. I like taking them with me to doctor's appts. or places I have to wait so I can browse through them. Thanks so much for the chance to win some copies of the magazines.
ReplyDeleteI too prefer print! I support both by subscribing to print and digi. It is so much easier to pick apart a design or instructions with a paper copy. I will sorely miss paper. Would love to win. Thank you soooo much for a chance!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm disappointed too! And I was doing my part as I had subscriptions! Oh well.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with you!! I LOVE my magazines in print! I have to have it in my hands. I am also sad to see mags going digtial. I didn't know CARDS went. Paper Creations is one of my favorites! So many projects in each issue! I did let my CardMaker script run out. Shame on me!! And I was a subscriber to Crafts n Things for many years. I still have them too. I think my oldest one is from 2003? maybe older! lol
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I do hope mags stay in print. I always have 3 or 4 on the coffee table to look at!
I also agree with you 100% I love to hold the magazine in my hands. I do not take my computer to crops but by golly I sure can take a magazine or two for inspiration. Thanks for the chance to win the magazines. Fingers crossed.
ReplyDeleteI have migrated to digital for many books, but if I really like it I get a hard copy. Just something about having a book or magazine in your hand versus the digital version. Would be interesting to see if the ahem..."older" generation is the one having the issues with digital versus the 20 somethings. Thanks for the chance to win :) Hugs to you!
ReplyDeletePrint magazines are my choice. I do not want to read a book or a magazine on an electronic device. I hoard my back issues and peruse them constantly to get ideas and inspiration. I won't subscribe to online publications. And, I think Marisa is on the right track. The younger generation will embrace these digital magazines wholeheartedly. (sigh)
ReplyDeleteThe experience of drooling over a print magazine just can't be achieved with digital.
ReplyDeleteI love getting "real mail". So I would love to get these print magazines. Meredith245 at yahoo dot com
ReplyDeleteNo dissent from the above with me...love the print copies although I own an iPad and a Kindle which I use...both were gifts. I love paper!!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you -- I like to hold the magazine in my hands - give me paper!
ReplyDeleteGive me paper or give my subscription a death certificate! : ) I too subscribe to Paper Creations and Cards. I will (or have) let my subscriptions to any mags going digital lapse. I have a huge library of magazines and won't turn loose of not even one. I am so very sad to see the world of magazines go digital. *sniff sniff*
ReplyDeletehi
ReplyDeleteI prefer print magazines.
I like to be able to take it with me and save a particular page.
I love print so much more than digital and am sad that it is going away. Give me paper anytime and I am happy. Like someone else said, I can't seem to let my print ones go and I actually scrounge garage sales to get more of the issues I have missed. Winning these will be a bonus :-)
ReplyDeletePrint magazines - definitely! Do not enjoy digital magazines at all. I was so sad to hear that Paper Crafts was going digital - had I known that I would not have renewed my subscription.
ReplyDeleteI love the Print Magazines also! It's just not the same when its digital.. I love all Paper Crafting Magazines.. :)
ReplyDeleteI am like you--I much prefer print editions.
ReplyDelete100% agree...I would much rather have a printed version!!
ReplyDeleteI want a magazine that I can touch, put down, come back, look through again and enjoy the slick pages for a long, long time. If that's 'old school', then I'm 'old student'. I seem to learn better from a magazine anyway...don't know why.
ReplyDeleteFirstly I love the daintiness of your card above, thank you for another lovely idea :) Re Print vs digital. I love all the information I can get digitally but I will never stop buying magazines and books. I love being able to curl up in bed with a magazine, pop and magazine or book into my onboard luggage, to be able to make notes etc. I can do all this with my laptop and often do but it constantly needs charging and is in grave danger when it slips to the floor as I doze :) Yes magazines will always have a place in my life.
